● Chemical-free. In general, you usually don't have to worry about any damage to your own hair from extensions. However, we don't recommend using extensions on hair that is thinning or if you begin to notice hair loss after the use of extensions.
The most popular types of hair extensions today are clip-ins and tape-ins, and their differences aren’t easy to perceive at first glance. Read on to learn about each type so you can choose the right extensions for you!
Months vs. Years
Whether you should invest in clip-in or tape-in extensions largely depends on what you’re looking for: do you want a quick hair extension piece or set that you can throw on for a Saturday night party or as part of your daily beauty regimen, or a (semi) permanent addition to your look? Clip-in extensions should only be worn for a day at a time, and should be promptly removed each evening before you go to sleep. They can last up to a year, depending on how often they are used and if they are cared for properly.
Tape-ins, once installed, can remain part of your natural hair for six to eight weeks, at which point they should be moved up to cover hair that's grown out. The lifespan of the extensions themselves depends on the type of hair they are made from.
Synthetic vs. Human Hair
When purchasing extensions, you’ll want to be careful about reading the fine print: they can be made of different types of hair. Styling and coloring options for clip-ins and tape-ins largely depends on the type of hair you purchased: because the extensions can be made of different types of hair, you may or may not be able to re-color your hair addition.
So if you don’t want to have to worry about styling your hair every day, definitely go for a synthetic clip-in extensions, as they will hold their style after washing (use cool water). Clip-ins also come in human hair and Remy human hair which is soft and looks very natural, but may require more maintenance than synthetic hair. Tape-ins are almost always made of Remy human hair.
At Home vs. Salon
Clip-in hair does, however, take the cake when it comes to ease of use. Unlike tape-ins, you won’t need to pay a visit to the salon to install clip-ins. Tape-ins require some maintenance, and can only be installed for months at a time, with maintenance being needed every 6 to 8 weeks. With clip-ins, all you need to do is watch a quick YouTube video, read a helpful article, and practice a few times and you’ll be a clip-in expert.
