Let’s be honest, what girl doesn’t love big voluptuous curls? Not only are they a gorgeous, jaw-dropping addition to any look, but they are a huge confidence booster, & lots of fun to rock! After all, what screams easy-going & free spirited more than a couple dozen wild Merida curls? Unfortunately though, not all of us are born blessed with beautiful curly-cues, and can have quite a bit of difficulty trying to achieve them in a look.

Other times, you might achieve this look, but it just doesn’t seem to want to stay put, & ends up going flat after hours of styling (the frustration is real). If this is you — fear not! We know this struggle better than anyone, so we’ve put together an easy step-by-step routine you can follow to achieve a flawless, long-lasting mess of curls in your natural hair. Be sure to read up on how to curl your extensions to get the full look. So, without further ado, let’s get started!

1 ) Prep Your Hair

First and foremost, before beginning any curling, it’s important to first prepare your hair. For any curly-themed look, it’s best to start it with a couple of days old hair that has some natural oils in it. These oils actually help to make hair more manageable and easier to shape, so leaving your hair just a little dirty beforehand is always a good idea (girl hack: you can also use dry shampoo in the meantime, too! Don’t worry boo, we got you).

Now, if you just washed your hair prior to reading this that’s totally okay too! You can still make your curls voluptuous and beautiful! Instead, just start by applying some BeautiMark leave-in spray leaving slightly dampened hair tied up or braided overnight. This will help to develop the basis of the shape of the curl prior to the heat application & make them easier to hold into place.

2 ) Get a grip!

Before you go running for that curling iron, hold up girl! We need to create a bit of a grit and hold texture to your hair to help keep the curls in place, especially if you have freshly washed hair! The easiest way to do this is by adding a touch of your favorite mousse to your hair to help create a little bit of a hold. Doing this prior to curling will help the curls to stay secure longer & contribute to a long-lasting look!

3 ) Curl it, pin it, & hold it tight!

Next, using your favorite curling iron at your preferred curl size, it’s time for the fun part! To get the party started, start by curling your hair in small 1/2 inch sections for the best results. Hold against heat for at least 5 seconds before releasing to form the shape (don't hold it too long, though!).

After heat, hold the curl in your hand for several seconds and use bobby pins to pin it to your head. Do this while it’s still in the curl shape and repeat around the whole head. Leave them like this for at least 15 minutes.

By forcing the hair to stay in this shape for prolonged time and cool this way, it will give it no other choice but to take on the shape it was heated in (aka our future majestic curl). But be sure your pins are sturdy, because if you release the curl while it’s still hot, it will make just like literally every hair tie you own, and vanish!

4 ) Shake It Loose

And lastly, once you release the Krakken of curliness from their pins, you can shake them up & run your fingers through them to loosen them (depending on your personal preference of how tight or wavy you want them to be). After that, apply a quick mist of hairspray or texturizing spray to the ends. This will ensure your styling new curly girls will hold a lasting, healthy glow all day long. And once you’ve done that, you’re done and ready to put in your extensions and start rocking your new lucious look!
